1994
Expansions to the stable and the trophy cabinet

Even the strongest riders of their generation need top horses – preferably more than one. Ludo was confronted with that fact for the first time in 1994. The stubborn mare Jannique (f. Fantastique) did not make anything easy for Ludo. Nonetheless, they enjoyed some noteworthy successes together, including a win at the Grand Prix in Kössen (Austria) and a place on the podium at the Derby the Irish Millstreet.

However, 1994 is best remembered as a transitionary year. It was also the year that Trudo, the fruit juice company, began to sponsor the stable.

1995
Darco’s spirit returns

1995: new year, new enthusiasm. Darco’s strong genes made their return to Ludo’s competition stables: King Darco (Darco x Flügel), the gelding from breeder Eddy Hermans in Zutendaal, took on a primary role in Ludo’s success story. The duo finished sixth in the European Championships in Sankt Gallen in Switzerland.

Krawaat (Hibrahim x Unicol d'Or aa) joined the ranks too, Ludo riding him straight to a third Belgian Nationals Title. There was no longer any denying it: Stal Philippaerts was once more buzzing with the promise of the highest competitive performance.

Ludo continued to build his dream team. In 1996, he gave a home to two new Darco offspring: Kunwald (Darco x Codex) and Kapteijn (Darco x Feinschnitt).

He also redeemed his ticket to the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Across the ocean with King Darco, he finished an admirable thirteenth in the national classifications. Ludo and King Darco also won the gold medal at the Belgian Championships in Bavikhove.

1997
Consistent strong performances

In 1997, King Darco and Krawaat confirmed their status as genuine prize-winning horses. Together with Ludo, they occupied the podium at various major competitions. Ludo also triumphed with Cardinal (f. Zeus) in the extremely challenging Derby in Lummen.

In the meantime, Ludo was thinking ahead: he prepared his pool with jumpers Nura (Codexco x Farao de Guldenboom) and Opus Sept (f. Vondel). At the end of 1997, he signed a new sponsorship agreement, this time with the Royal Begemann Group.

This financing and a great deal of prize money allowed Ludo to unreservedly live out his passion. He did not shy away from giving new horses a chance. As such, in 1998 he achieved excellent results with Kibeaura (f. Major de la Cour), Landino (Landgraf I x Roman) and Nicky Laudrum (Darco x Echo de Thurin).

Nura and Krawaat proved to be the highlights: triumph at the Nation’s Cup trials in Lisbon, silver at the Nation’s Cup in Mechelen and a second place at the World Cup in Bordeaux.

Ludo maintained his reputation in the international jumping world, performing at major competitions. Consistency played a part in this: Ludo repeatedly treated the audience to strong performances. This secured him starting rights, time after time, at tournaments around the world.

1999
Otterongo springs into action

In 1999, Nura and Opus Sept shone, as well as two new powerhouses from Ludo’s stable. Otterongo (Darco x Hedjaz) sprang into action after quite a long time with the Philippaerts family. Quite the rough diamond.

Between 1999 and 2002, Ludo and Otterongo proved themselves to be lord and master of the arena on countless occasions. Droit de B'Neville (Platière x Dair Patrick xx), proved to be another promising rookie at Stoeterij Dorperheide. Among other victories, he brought Ludo to the winners’ circle during the Grand Prix in Den Bosch.

Stal Philippaerts became increasingly well-known for excellent jumping horses. Ludo rode the waves of his success: in the new millennium, top-level performances followed one after the other. All thanks went to his first-rate, well-cared-for equine athletes.

2000
Too strong for Ehning and Beerbaum

2000 brought a new sponsor and a new top horse – once more a son of Darco. The Verelst group jumped at the opportunity to be involved as financiers; they became owners of Otterongo. When stallion Parco (Darco x Attack Z) from Jan Bongaerts powered into the picture, Ludo once more confidently headed to the most challenging international events.

Riding with Parco that year, Ludo finished in the honours, becoming Belgian Champion for the fifth time. Otterongo once more delivered a heroic performance on the other side of the globe. Seemingly undaunted by the long flight to Australia, he jumped into fourth place at the Olympic Games in Sydney

There was no stopping Otterongo in 2000. He gave his rider one of the most memorable victories of his career with a win at the German Masters in Stuttgart. ‘Philippaerts left the German team exasperated. No obstacle was too difficult for the Belgian pair’, read the German sport pages. Top rider Marcus Ehning and multiple Olympic Champion Ludger Beerbaam were left in his dust – defeated on their own grounds.
