2014
Five-star rider at cruising speed

Nicola and his brother Olivier performed almost every weekend at national and international competitions. Not just to win prizes and titles: it also gave them the opportunity to train and promote horses from the Philippaerts family, and to prove themselves as riders on a weekly basis, all while keeping their fingers on the pulse of the equestrian sporting world.

Nonetheless, Nicola delivered some impressive performances. 2014 saw a win in the Göteborg World Cup (with Donatella – N), a victory in the Big Ben Grand Prix in Toronto (with Challenge van de Begijnakker) and podium finishes in five-star jumping events at Doha, Qatar (with Cortez) and St. Tropez (with Donatella – N).

Although the Philippaerts brothers compete with each other in the arena, they remain firm friends. Nicola explained to Cavalor: ‘Outside the arena, we try to help each other as much as possible; we are one team and we’re both striving for the same goal.’

Performing under the H&M flag

2015 will go down in the history books as an especially busy and successful year. Nicola once again showed his strengths at the Lexington Grand Prix in America, this time with H&M Harley van de Bisschop.

The inclusion of H&M in the horses’ names? The origins are to be found in a new sponsor agreement with the Philippaerts brothers. They began riding in clothing from the Swedish fashion chain.

2016
Olympian with a future

Twelve years after father Ludo last participated, a Philippaerts once again appeared in the Olympic arena in 2016. Unfortunately, H&M Zilverstar T twice refused to jump in Rio. It was quite a disappointment.

But, Zilverstar was not to stay down for long, as proven by a win at the Grand Prix of Maastricht. Nicola took this a step further with a victory in the Grand Prix at Tryon and a third place in the World Cup in London, each time with Harley van de Bisschop.

The future looked extremely promising for Nicola. As he explained to Equnews: ‘If horse riding were no longer an option, I’d have more than enough opportunities to continue on as a trainer or coach. But at the moment, my main goal is to make my mark as a rider in the top grades.’
