2006

High flyers and a change of guard

‘The glory days of Parco belong to the past!’ You may have heard this being whispered in 2006, but nothing could be further from the truth. Ludo did run his successful stallion more sporadically in the competitive arenas, but he had a good reason for doing this ... Ludo wanted to prepare Parco for a top-notch performance at the most challenging meet of the year: the World Championships in Aachen. And he succeeded: in brilliant form, Parco charged into ninth place. The stallion also appeared at the start of the brand new Global Champions Tour, setting Ludo up as the first winner of the competition. This silenced the critics.

The family stables were also busy in 2006: Narcotique de Muze and Vici van het Plutoniahof made their debuts. And Winningmood made his name by becoming Belgian Champion for seven-year-olds.

2007

End of the Zangersheide era

Relative peace and quiet characterised the year 2007 at the Philippaerts stables. Tauber van het Kapelhof still demonstrated what he was capable of: speed appeared to be just one of his abilities. The highlight? A triumph at the CN Worldwide Derby in Valkenswaard.

Meanwhile, Winningmood reached cruising speed in the 1.40-metre course. Unfortunately, an injury then kept him from the competitive circuit for months.

2007 was also the end of an era: Ludo rode for the last time under the blue banner of Team Zangersheide. He was gradually passing the torch on to the next generation. More than ever, he invested in the abilities of his twins, Olivier and Nicola. The up-and-coming riders often accompanied their father to international competitions. Those experiences soon paid off. Nicola was Belgian Champion in the pony division and shone when he finished fourth in the final rankings of the European Championship.

2008

With Winningmood on a winning course

There was no doubting Ludo belonged in the saddle in 2008. Winningmood delivered his first podium position for the year, with a third place in the Bordeaux Grand Prix. Ludo’s earlier predictions proved true: Winningmood was crowned the new star of the stable.

Throughout 2008, Ludo achieved excellent results with the horses Sam, Tauber van het Kapelhof, Nobel de Virton, Topgun and Kassini Jac. But it was with Winningmood that he once more climbed into the highest echelons of competitive jumping. Of course, Winningmood was also the offspring of Darco – say no more.

Thanks to Winningmood’s steep growth curve, Parco was able to retire. Ludo’s faithful stallion took a glorious departure from the sport with a victory on the 1.45 metre course. Afterwards, he became a full-time stud.

Ludo was once again a member of the Belgian team that took part in the Nations Cup in La Baule in France. And once again, he was part of the Global Champions Tour. The year concluded wonderfully with a World Cup victory in Mechelen.

2009

A return to Tauber

Ludo’s high-flying career suffered a number of serious setbacks in 2009. They began with the sale of Winningmood to the French Baron Edouard de Rothschild, to be ridden by Portuguese Luciana Diniz. In and of itself, this wasn’t enough to keep Ludo down. Sherry Mury Marais Z took over the position Winningmood had been performing in and showed great promise. But then injury struck. Sherry Mury Marais Z was forced to stop.

Ludo brought Sam, Kassini Jac and Tauber van het Kapelhof back out of the stable. Doing so turned his luck around. All performed well, especially Tauber van het Kapelhof, finishing with an excellent ranking among the big boys. This including a brilliant victory in the Preis der Sparkasse in Aachen.

At the same time, Olivier and Nicola sharpened their riding skills in the Juniors. With father, Ludo, as coach. They submitted excellent performances and the champagne flowed when Nicola won a silver medal at the European Championships.

2010

In promising company

Ludo concluded the decade calmly and in style. He achieved a number of excellent rankings, especially with the help of Nobel de Virton (f. Chatman), Kassini Jac and Vadetta van het Mettenhof, the new mare and jumper at Dorperheide.

However, eyes were also turning more and more towards the Philippaerts twins as time went on. They turned Ludo’s training and expert advice into victories at important competitions: Olivier won the European Championship for Juniors. And Nicola won the golden place at the Junior Olympic Games in Singapore.

From then on, Ludo and his sons were together at all times, whether at home or on the competitive circuit. They had to compete with each other for victory on more than one occasion. International jumping had gained a dynasty of top riders.
