Nicola is out of action after a fall from a young horse during a training session on Wednesday afternoon. The 26 year-old Philippaerts got a shoulder injury and had to undergo a surgery in Genk (ZOL). After a rest period of 6 weeks, Nicola can begin rehabilitation.
As usual, Wednesday afternoon, Nicola trains a 5-year-old horse. This time, it went wrong, and Nicola falls. An emergency crew had to intervene and brought him to the Hospital in Genk. Just a few hours later, Nicola was already in surgery. “It went very quickly and it is hard to describe how it happened exactly.”, says Nicola. “I immediately felt that it wasn’t right and I was in a lot of pain. After the necessary examinations in the hospital, it was decided not to waste time and to operate immediately. The operation went well, but I still have a lot of pain. I spoke to my doctor this morning, he told me I have to rest for 6 weeks, after which I can start rehab. That’s hard, but it could have been worse. I want to thank my doctor and his team for all the good care. It now comes down to take the necessary rest and then working towards the indoor season again.”.
2019 seemed to be a promising year for Nicola and H&M Chilli Willi. They had great performances. In March, Nicola and his 11-year-old stallion finished 2nd in the Longines Global Tour in Doha. Looking forward to the European Championships in Rotterdam, Nicola gave Chilli Willi some rest so he could peak on the best moments. And it did work out for them, as they finished 3rd in the Global Tour in Chantilly. Shortly after the LGCT of Chantilly, Chilli Willi had an injury and so they had to cancel the European Championships. Now, after the fall, Nicola needs to sit still as well for a few months.
With some patience, rest and a good revalidation both Nicola and H&M Chilli Willi will get back stronger.
