2017
Fall down twice, stand up three times

Together with his twin brother Nicola, Olivier makes a great start this year. The two dominate at the Hong Kong Tatler Trophy, during the Longines Masters. Olivier and H&M Challenge vd Begijnakker Z are unbeatable. Shortly after, Olivier’s luck takes a turn for the worse. He falls and gets underneath the horse and sustains a concussion. As a result, he will miss the World Cup contest in Göteburg. He gets back into the saddle as soon as he can and, among others, he joins the Antwerp and Lummen contest, two important Belgian jumping contests. In the Nations Cup in Lummen, the Belgian team, that Olivier is part of, ranked 3rd. In Drammen, the Belgians shift up one more position toward the top.

The 23-year old equestrian from Limburg is currently 26th in the world. Oliver’s hard work is being rewarded as he is selected for the European Championship in Göteburg in August. But it is not to be, during the practice lap for the EC something goes wrong. Olivier gets catapulted across H&M Legend of Love’s neck and his shoulder gets dislocated. Oliver is going through a tough and difficult period. “I was very cranky at times. The only thing I wanted was to do my sport, but I had to rehabilitate first, before I could get back. This was a particularly tough period, but Lieven Maesschalck and his Move to Cure team supported me tremendously.” His comeback in October is immediately successful. With his mare H&M Legend of Love, he wins the Great Prize at Jumping Indoor Maastricht. A highly emotional victory. Doing this, he follows in the footsteps of dad Ludo, who won the GP of Maastricht in 1990 and brother Nicola, who won the 2016 GP with Zilverstar.

Also the end of the year turns out to be a tough period. Olivier’s stallion Cabrio v/d Heffinck, who brought him a number of podium finishes, says goodbye to the sport and will, in the future, be used only as a breeding stallion in Zangersheide. It’s not easy to say goodbye to a fantastic horse like Cabrio.

2018
Across the ocean

Olivier spends about 4 to 5 hours per day in the saddle. The weeks during which Olivier does not attend competitions can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

Olivier starts an American internship and appears at the Winter Equestrian Festival for the first time. His baptism is an immediate success. Together with H&M Ikker he leaves no less than 53 opponents behind him and wins the Great Prize. What made this victory so special? Olivier and H&M Ikker grew toward this level together.

Back in Europa, Olivier directly returns to his routine with H&M Legend of Love, with success. The equestrian and horse take a silver medal at the World Cup contest in Göteborg. This achievement immediately puts the duo on the starting list for Olivier’s first World Cup Final in Paris. During this debut, they perform exceptionally well.

Also together with his team, the London Knights (brother Nicola, Ben Maher, Martin Fuchs and Emily Moffitt), Olivier seems to be in top condition and he takes the overall win at the Longines Global Champions League. This year, their team wins five out of the eighteen contests.

2019
Belgium put on the map

The year in which Olivier made history, together with the Belgian team, Olivier Philippaerts (H&M Extra), Pieter Clemens (Quintini), François Mathy Jr. (Uno the la Roque) and Yves Vanderhasselt (Jeunesse). They made a historical achievement (space) and won the Calgary Nations Cup. Olivier will join the European Championship in Rotterdam as a substitute. Belgium was crowned European Champion and thus assured selection for the Olympic Games in 2019. The Belgian equestrian sport is in the heyday of its popularity. Also at the Nations Cup final in Barcelona, the Belgians are on the podium.

Olivier puts himself in the spotlight with H&M Legend of Love, during the World Cup Final in Göteburg. The two end in sixth place.

But also H&M Extra is a big part of all the victories in 2019. Therefore it is devastating to lose a good partner and even better friend, Léon Spronken (owner of H&M Extra).

Traditionally, Olivier concludes the year in Mechelen. He strongly participates in a contest and reaches the sixth position at the World Cup, the fifth position at the Great Prize of Flanders, he becomes third at the Masters and ends fourth in the stallion test. He attends all contests. It’s just the victory that is missing.
